Indeed Movies_#67_Sons of the Desert

Welcome to episode #36.  All the way at 67 it is the great Sons of the Desert (William A. Seitler, 1933)

Summary: So that he and Stan can sneak away to Chicago and attend the annual “Sons of the Desert” lodge convention, Ollie pretends to be sick, and gets a doctor (who turns out to be a veterinarian) to prescribe a long ocean voyage to Hawaii. Decked out in leis and strumming ukeleles, they return home only to learn that the ship supposedly carrying them has sunk. Their hastily- contrived tale of “ship-hiking” their way back cuts no ice with their wives, who’ve been at the movies watching a newsreel of the lodge’s convention parade, starring… guess who?

Join Keefe, Chris, Paxton as we jump right in to the tall tale of friends.   As well as big time husband abuse.   Actually, it’s the story of Paxton and Keefe, but they won;t say it out loud.

Indeed Movies_#68_Ninotchka

Welcome to episode #35 – in at the spot of 68 Ninotchka (Ernst Lubitsch, 1939)

Summary: Three Russian officials arrive in 1930s Paris to sell the jewels that were once the property of the Grand Duchess Swana. The Duchess wants to reclaim her property and her playboy friend, Leon, manages to stop the sale at least temporarily. With the time dragging on, a new no-nonsense Russian envoy, Ninotchka, arrives to take over the negotiations. She chastises her three colleagues for their obvious enjoyment of capitalistic society but soon finds herself charmed by Leon, at first not realizing he is involved with the jewels. They fall in love but it’s unclear if there is any chance of their relationship ever becoming permanent. Leon sets out to ensure they do.

Join Keefe, Chris, the Ghost of Paxton when we look at the what the world could have been for 1939, and how well Lubitsch got it right.   Jewels, spies and the love for Capitalism.  Awww a romance story indeed.

Indeed_Movies_#71_The Royal Tenenbaums

Welcome to episode #32- #71 The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) directed by Wes Anderson

Summary:

Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children–Chas, Richie, and Margot–they were a family of geniuses and then they separated. Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have had a preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a Braverman grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father’s fault. The tale follows the family’s sudden and unexpected reunion one recent winter.

Keefe, Paxton and Chris take a long…I mean very long journey into a film about a punchline.   That’s it…all about a joke.  You know what… forget it.  I am going home….

Indeed_Movies_#73_The Nutty Professor

Welcome to episode #30- #73 The Nutty Professor (1963) directed by Jerry Lewis

Summary:

Nerd. Milquetoast. Klutz. These are just three of the many undesirable words that can be used to describe Professor Julius Kelp. But all that changes when the chemistry expert invents a potion that transforms him into a suave, sexy chick magnet, whom Julius aptly names Buddy Love. Unfortunately, there’s one side effect: Buddy can’t control when he’ll change back into Julius, an event that always happens at inopportune times. How will Julius/Buddy resolve his Jekyll-and-Hyde dilemma?

Keefe, Chris and Paxton look back at a well establish classic in the wold of comedy.   Even a remake can;t pull away the foundation of the original.  Now if only we can controll Keefe’s inner Buddy Love……

Indeed_Movies_#74_Trading_Places

Welcome to episode #29- #74 Trading Places (1983) directed by John Landis

Summary:

The “nature-nurture” theory that motivated so many Three Stooges comedies is the basis of John Landis’s hit comedy. The fabulously wealthy but morally bankrupt Randolph and Mortimer Duke brothers (played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) make a one-dollar bet over heredity vs. environment. Curious as to what might happen if different lifestyles were reversed, they arrange for impoverished street hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) to be placed in the lap of luxury and trained for a cushy career in commodities brokerage. Simultaneously, they set about to reduce aristocratic yuppie Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) to poverty and disgrace, hiring a prostitute (Jamie Lee Curtis) to hasten his downfall. When Billy Ray hears this and learns that the brothers intend to dump him back on the streets once their experiment is complete, he seeks out Winthorpe, and together the pauper-turned-prince and prince-turned-pauper plot an uproarious revenge. With the good-hearted prostitute and Winthorpe’s now former butler (Denholm Elliott) as their accomplices, they set about to hit the brothers where it really hurts: in the pocketbook

Keefe, Chris and Paxton kick back in the 80’s to check out fast cars, easy money and Eddie Murphy?  Ah, only to be an experiment of some wall street rich dudes….
